I’m sure you have a whole bunch of examples from your own reading of different ways of approaching dialogue … all of which work. Yeah, the first few are awful, but I didn't know what I was doing yet. The crime novelist's dialogue is so catchy, so snappy, so utterly say-able, that his novels and short stories have been made into some of the talkiest films in Hollywood: Get Shorty, Jackie Brown, 3:10 to Yuma, Out of Sight and, of course, the terrific FX series Justified starring Leonard's laconic lawman Raylan Givens.
